Many of us in the CNPS have immensely enjoyed the insights that Bob Muns shared with us during many field trips. Bob has such a wealth of information built up from careful study and observation of our local native flora, and he is always so willing to share his knowledge with others.
This page seeks to preserve scanned electronic records of the magnificent checklists so painstakingly constructed by Bob over many years. Bob completed at least 33 of them. A program to digitize Bob's lists was begun some time ago by Tom Chester, and there is no better introduction to Bob's work than that on Tom Chester's web site, part of which is as follows:
“For over 20 years, Bob Muns has devoted himself to compiling plant lists for different places in Southern California, and communicating that information to other lovers of native plants. Bob has conducted countless plant walks for the Natural Science Section of the Sierra Club, teaching many people how to identify and appreciate our native plants. He provides written plant lists on each of those walks, which are of immense help in keeping track of the large amount of information conveyed on his walks.
“The printed plant lists are works of art as well as science. They compactly present all the essential information about each species in Bob's beautiful hand script. The lists are usually accompanied by illustrations drawn by Bob, and often contain more detailed information about selected species.
“The written plant lists are invaluable to those who follow in Bob's footsteps. Having a plant list in hand for an area vastly speeds up the process of trying to figure out exactly what plant species one sees in a given area.
“Finally, the scientific value of Bob's lists is enormous. They provide a detailed record of the distribution of our native plants on a very fine scale.”
The presence of Bob's lists on this web site does not substitute for the digital versions compiled by Tom; rather, it complements that effort by preserving Bob's original calligraphy and art work. For convenience, the links below are organized as on Tom Chester's web page, by geographic subdivisions as given in the Jepson Manual, 1993. The following is a partial collection of booklets, which we hope to expand until it is complete.
Most booklets can be downloaded here in three different layouts, one being the original, intended for assembling stapled booklets, the other two being simpler layouts that most people may find more suitable for personal use. For a description of the layouts, see the technical information page.
