Annual plant sale
For many years our chapter has conducted an annual sale of native plants suitable for gardens in our area. If you are new to native gardening, see also our New to Natives page and our Plant Sources page.
INTO THE GARDEN: NATIVE PLANT SALE 2015
Saturday, November 14, 2015, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Eaton Canyon Nature Center, 1750 N. Altadena Drive, Pasadena, CA
Note: The 2015 date is tentative, to be confirmed
A good variety of reasonably priced California native plants and wildflower seeds appropriate for gardens in the Los Angeles basin will be available, including plants for attracting birds and butterflies to your home garden. Knowledgeable chapter members will be on hand to answer questions.
We obtain our plants from high-quality local nurseries specializing in native plants. We also have plants propagated and grown by members. If you would like to donate plants or seeds that you have propagated, see the member-propagated plants and seeds section below.
If you would like to be a volunteer helper for the plant sale, see the helper section below.
Approximately 1,900 plants for sale!
Printed copies of the plant list will be available at the plant sale.
It takes a lot of people to make the plant sale work as successfully as it has in recent years. Volunteers, members or non-members, are welcome. If you can help, even for only a few hours, please send us a message via our Contact Us page. Helpers are needed in the following ways:
- Prior to the sale time:
Catalog preparation and copying
- Friday (the day before the sale):
Arrange plants on the Nature Center patio
- Saturday (the sale day): A variety of activities throughout the day
Early morning setup
Assist customers with plant information
Write up plant purchase slips
Coordinate sale of T-shirts, books, CDs
Staff the CNPS information and membership table
Assist the cashiers
Haul purchased plants to customers' cars
Provide food for the volunteer team
Clean up at the end of the day
We welcome donations of native plants or seeds for our plant sale that have been propagated by members.
To ensure that we sell only high-quality, correctly identified plants, member-propagated plants and seeds should be:
- properly identified and native to California
- plants well-rooted, in 4-inch or 1-gallon pots
- clean, with no pests or diseases
- negligible chaff mixed with seeds
- seeds packaged in small envelopes provided by the chapter
Donated plants and seeds will be sold for the same price as purchased material.
Donors must notify Barbara Eisenstein of the plant sale committee of their intention to participate by October 1. (You can also send us a message via our Contact Us page.) Plants and/or seeds are to be delivered for labelling to Eaton Canyon Nature Center, or to Barbara Eisenstein, no later than the Monday preceding the plant sale. Donors are responsible for picking up any unsold items no later than the Monday immediately following the plant sale.
