Mountain Plant Walks at Chilao, in the Angeles National Forest, San Gabriel Mountains:
Jointly sponsored by the U.S.D.A. Forest Service Chilao Visitor Center, the San Gabriel Mountains Heritage Association (SGMHA), and this CNPS Chapter. These high-country plant walks are led by Jane Strong, and are held on the first Saturday of the month. We meet in the Chilao Visitor Center parking lot at 10:00 a.m. Walks will be a mixture of car tours and short hikes lasting two or more hours.

Saturday, May 3, 2008

Saturday, June 7, 2008

Saturday, July 5, 2008

Saturday, August 2, 2008

Saturday, September 6, 2008

We suggest self-organized car-pooling from the intersection of State Highway 2 (Angeles Crest Highway) and Interstate Highway 210 (Foothill freeway), where there is ample space for parking. It is 45 minutes/27 miles from that point along Angeles Crest Highway to the Chilao Visitor Center. Please bring your own picnic (or you could eat at the nearby Newcomb's Ranch, which is a few miles further along Angeles Crest Highway.)

For each vehicle, you will need a National Forest Adventure Pass. You can get one of these at the Clear Creek Information Station on the way up (8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.), telephone 626-821-6764. Alternatively, you can obtain your Adventure Pass before you set out, e.g., at the Sport Chalet store in La Cañada, or at Jay's Shell service station near where CA-2 crosses the I-210 in La Cañada.

For background information and more details, see the special SGMHA web page. Our CNPS Chapter contact is Candy Byers, telephone 818-793-9661. The Chilao Visitor Center, telephone 626-796-5541, may be able to advise on road conditions.
