Our chapter
WHO WE ARE
The California Native Plant Society (CNPS) is a statewide non-profit organization of amateurs and professionals with a common interest in California's native plants. The Society seeks to increase understanding of California's native flora and to preserve this rich resource for future generations. Membership is open to all. Our members have diverse interests including natural history, botany, ecology, conservation, photography, drawing, hiking, and gardening
We are one of more than 30 CNPS chapters spread throughout California. Most CNPS activities are organized at the chapter level where the various interests of individual members can be served, and where there are opportunities for individuals to be involved to the degree that suits them best. The activities of our chapter include:
- speakers with audio-visual presentations most months of the year
- field trips in the area
- plant sales
- educational outreach
- conservation projects
There are approximately 9,000 CNPS members in the state. There are approximately 215 members in our chapter.
MEETINGS AND PROGRAMS
We have a program meeting, each with a speaker, usually an audio-visual presentation, on the fourth Thursday of each month except July, August, November, and December. The meetings begin at 7:30 p.m., and are preceded by a social gathering at 7:00 p.m., usually including plant identification examples. We meet at:
Eaton Canyon Nature Center
1750 Altadena Drive
Pasadena, CA
For a list of forthcoming programs, see the Events and News page.
FIELD TRIPS AND OUTINGS
Eaton Canyon Plant Walks are held on the second Sunday of each month beginning at 9 a.m., except during July and August.
This is an excellent way to learn the local flora and to begin understanding basic botany. Leaders are helpful and knowledgeable and very willing to answer your questions.
For details of forthcoming Plant Walks, see the Events and News page.
Chilao Plant Walks in the Angeles National Forest are held on the first Saturday of each month.
We meet in the Chilao Visitor Center parking lot at 10:00 a.m. Walks will be a mixture of car tours and short hikes lasting two or more hours. These walks are jointly sponsored by the U.S.D.A. Forest Service Chilao Visitor Center, the San Gabriel Mountains Heritage Association (SGMHA), and this CNPS Chapter. For details, see the Events and News page.
We also hold occasional field trips to places of interest in the area.
For details of forthcoming field trips, see the Events and News page.
